We have two openings at Free Press - http://www.freepress.net/job-openings

And here are two other great jobs in public interest policy:

Injured Western Journalists Reportedly Make it Out...

theatlantic:

Injured Western Journalists Reportedly Make it Out of Syria

Though there are multiple reports that journalists Paul Conroy and Elizabeth Bouvier have been safely removed from Syria, we’re all just waiting for confirming YouTube documentation. Conroy, a photographer for the Sunday Times, and Bouvier, a reporter for Le Figaro, were injured in the shellings that killed Marie Colvin and Remi Ochlik in Syria last week. The Guardian is reporting that Conroy made it to Lebanon even though his escape envoy came under heavy fire from Syrian forces that may have killed several activists helping Conroy. They also report that his employers at the Times and his wife are confirming that he is safe. The Australian reports that Conroy’s father is also confirming his son’s escape, pinpointing his location to Beirut.

The Guardian notes that the multiple accounts of Bouvier’s escape or non-escape are making it difficult to tell where she is: Reuters says she’s in Lebanon; The Washington Post says her whereabouts are still unknown. Bouvier drew international attention by posting a video on YouTube detailing her desperate situation last week.

Today, and for the following 19 days, the Knight News Challenge is open for business. The theme of the challenge is Networks.

The most common question I’ve been asked since we announced the challenge is exactly what we mean by Networks. We’re trying not to define the term too…

Some GOP Candidates Leaned Heavily on Super PACs in January

The GOP presidential candidates and the super PACs supporting them accelerated their fundraising — and especially their spending — in January as the first primary and caucus voters went to the polls. Mitt Romney spent nearly three times the amount he raised that month, tapping into the stockpile he built in 2011 to unload $18.8 million in 31 days — nearly as much as the campaign spent during the entire fourth quarter in 2011. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul also spent more than they raised in January.

Luckily, they all have super PACs to help keep up the pace. The graph above shows the boost super PACs (who for the first time in January out-raised the candidates themselves) gave to the GOP field as early voting contests got underway.

Read the report on OpenSecrets Blog: http://bit.ly/wxPP8e

Photo: Donna Lazzini embraces her son, Timothy Lazzini, a resident of the Sonoma Developmental Center who died in 2005, in a family photo collage celebrating his life.

California has assembled a unique police force to protect about 1,800 of its most vulnerable patients – men and women with cerebral palsy, severe autism and other mental disabilities who live in state institutions and require round-the-clock monitoring and protection from abuse.

But our new investigation has found that detectives and patrol officers at the state’s five board-and-care institutions routinely fail to conduct basic police work even when patients die under mysterious circumstances.
